A study of a river or a stream is an excellent way of introducing primary children to a study of the physical environment.
Most towns and cities are sited on the banks of rivers and this location impacts significantly on the lives of people who live there. This unit examines the strong links between people and rivers; why people settle near them and what use they make of them. Most schools are close enough to a river to undertake fieldwork, whether observing a large river in an urban environment or donning wellingtons for a closer study of a stream in a safe and accessible location. The unit, for Years 4 to 6, also covers major rivers abroad, such as the Nile and Amazon, which children may already have come across.
The activities in the unit encourage children to take a creative approach to rivers through a range of poetry, literature and artwork.
