This skills-based unit, aimed at Years 2 to 4, encourages pupils to improve their numeracy through geography. Different geographical skills using numbers are explored, based on mapwork and numerical data linked to a variety of Key Stage 2 units of work, and an awareness of the use of number. It ties in well with the programme of study for Key Stage 2, and is flexible enough to be permit use of the ideas to develop your own material tailored to the numeracy and geographical skills of your pupils.
The unit includes an orienteering exercise, designed to be carried out in the local area or a nearby park, as a practical way of using mapwork to stimulate the pupils into using skills they have learnt. The unit will best be taught over a period of time and different parts could be taught in different year groups.
