National Curriculum

Description:

This unit, for years 3 and 4, uses enquiry skills from geography, history and art to look at ‘Any Street’ as a useful pre-requisite to looking at ‘Any Town’. The main purpose is to develop curiosity and an eye for detail, and so widen children’s knowledge and understanding of familiar and unfamiliar places. The evidence of close observation contributes to understanding about maintaining historical character, developing a good quality of life and understanding the role of citizenship in the environment. Children will develop a sense of responsibility to the built environment and learn to appreciate the cultural, historical and geographical factors which have led to each street having its own character.

At the same time, they will develop detective skills: observation, noticing discrepancies, finding explanations. Who lived here? Are there blue plaques? Who lives here now? What is up the side street, or in the back garden? What can we do to improve our street? This is a chance for children to engage in active geography and make practical contributions to the life of their own neighbourhood.
