National Curriculum

Description:

Whether as residents or visitors, older primary children are likely to be familiar with the coast and some of its features. Aimed at year 5/6 pupils, this unit augments and extends the content in the QCA scheme by the inclusion of activities which make productive use of ICT resources (web-based and simulation), develop thinking skills and foster a creative response to the coastal environment. Some of the activities are ideal for stretching more able pupils.

Concepts and issues such as tidal influences, conservation, heritage and environmental threats are explored through approaches which foster collaboration, focused research, independent learning and debate. Physical and human processes characteristic of coasts underpin the activities, and accompanying resources on the CD present evidence of these processes through visual images. Necessary background knowledge about coastal processes is presented in the booklet and, more fully, on the CD.
