The new Secondary Curriculum - What support is available?
The CfBT project has been supporting teachers in the implementation of the new secondary curriculum by online resources, Regional Subject leader conferences and a network of regional subject advisors.
|
Throughout June and July the CfBT website is hosting a series of Hot Seat Web Casts to help answer your questions and discuss topics on implementing the new secondary curriculum in your school. From Monday 9 June to Friday 20 June the national subject leads for geography will be online at least once a day to respond to your questions and discussions through the forum pages. You can log in as many times as you like to review answers and add further questions.

The CfBT team at the GA has successfully completed conferences in each government region, which have been attended by over 800 subject leaders. These have offered subject leaders to get to grips with the 'big picture' of the new curriculum and consider the opportunities that the new programmes of study offer to geography teaching as well as a look at how to start planning a new Key Stage 3. In addition to the conferences Regional Subject Advisors (RSAs) have been working with networks of teachers in the planning of their new Key Stage 3.

To help you prepare for implementing the new curriculum there is a new website which offers planning tools and a variety of resources:
Check out the Geography Resource Library, which gives access to videos, case studies, supporting materials and links. These have been developed with the GA and schools.
It also includes a Curriculum Planning Wizard, which will help you to plan what you are going to do and work strategically with your school's senior leadership to enhance and develop curriculum planning within your school.
|
The new curriculum will be implemented from 2008 to 2011 and begins with year 7 in September. We recommend that the whole structure of the key stage 3 is planned in order to create a coherent curriculum that shows progression on a journey through the key stage. Many teachers have adopted the dartboard curriculum that featured in Ian Dixon's article in the Spring edition of GA Magazine (Issue 8) on 'Visualizing the curriculum'. Members can view this edition online.
The CfBT project has received further funding until March 2009.
Please get in touch with us If you would like more information about the June Subject Leader Conference, or if you are part of a network of teachers and would like a regional advisor to help you with your curriculum making.
