Past Themes - The tsunami in the Indian Ocean

The tsunami in the Indian Ocean has touched the lives of many people around the world. The GA offers its condolences to all those who have been affected by the tragedy. We also recognise that in events like this, it is the role of geography to help young people understand and make sense of what has happened.

The challenge remains for geography teachers to respond in a way that is sympathetic, informed and helps children to understand the human impacts and effects as well as the physical causes.

There is no one 'right' way to do this, but geography teachers could consider using some of Diane Swift's ideas here for teaching and learning about the tsunami of 26 December 2004 using a place-based approach.

Starting from pupils' lives the materials demonstrate how teachers can develop pupils' understanding of the physical world, indicate links between place and space, enable pupils to investigate the human environment from political, moral and ethical dimensions and look at the interactions in terms of aid and trade. They also incorporates aspects of scale when looking at the consequences of the tsunami for Banda Ache. Finally, the spotlight is turned back on links between the disaster and pupils' lives.

Diane provides materials for supporting the sequence of lessons and activities, and indicates where others can be sourced on the web and in print. The materials can be downloaded as follows:

In addition, a developing set of materials about the Indonesian Tsunami has been placed on the Teacher Resource Exchange.

The Staffordshire Learning Net Forum also contains extensive discussion about the Indonesian Tsunami and the world's response.

Teachers may also wish to refer to research on a tsunami that purportedly took place in the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary in 1607. A press release about the research and a forthcoming BBC television documentary on the event can be downloaded here. Contact Dr Simon Haslett for further information.

If you have ideas or resources that you would like to contribute please email them to Anne Greaves.
