Two new Global Dimension resources from the DEA

The education charity DEA has recently published 'Exploring together: A global dimension to the secondary curriculum', a pack of leaflets exploring the global dimension to each secondary National Curriculum subject, including geography.

The pack provides starting points for exploring what the global dimension means for particular subjects and can also be used for cross-curriculum planning. One copy of the 'Exploring together' pack has been sent to all secondary school headteachers in England, together with the 2009-10 Global Wallplanner which can help with planning for schemes of work, assemblies and other whole school activities.

Curriculum Making: Teaching Ideas

Did you know about the Teaching Ideas section of the Geography Teaching Today website? There are now 22 resources that have been contributed by teachers. Some of the most recent include Place, Space and Scale, a unit designed to introduce Year 7s to core geographical concepts, Minibeasts, a unit on ESD for the Foundation stage, and The Global Challenge: Will we destroy our planet?, a unit of work for secondary that explores our impact on the planet.
Teaching Ideas on the Geography Teaching Today website

The resources in this section have all been created by teachers attending our Curriculum Making courses during 2007 and 2008. We have chosen examples of teachers' work which, we believe, exemplify the approach we call 'Living Geography' and demonstrate how teachers have localised activities and underpinned what has been done with careful, purposeful thought.

New Living Geography Resources

We have added three new lesson ideas to our Living Geography area. Developed in partnership with the Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RIDO) all three resources make innovative and effective use of Google Earth. The resources give students the chance to decide on the best site for a new football stadium, the opportunity to test their skills as developers in a regeneration exercise, and to explore the changing environment of an area through the eyes of the people who have lived and worked there. The resources are all based on the Rotherham area but can easily be modified in order to explore a planning issue in your local area.

Eye To Eye with Child Labour

Eye to Eye is an educational project for secondary schools run by Save the Children in the UK and Spain, and funded by the European Union. Eye to Eye's main aim is to develop, in collaboration with secondary school teachers, engaging and participatory classroom resources on the various issues connected to child labour. Photos and stories have been collected from young workers around the world and Save the Children have collaborated with teachers to develop teaching resources to fit in with the new 2008 National Curriculum and pilot them. Many of these are already up in the Resources section of the Eye to Eye website.

The films make a great resource for both primary and secondary geography.

Earthlearningidea

Earthlearningidea was set up for the International Year of Planet Earth with the intention of reaching as many children throughout the world as possible, particularly those who suffer from lack of resources or from lack of thought-provoking teaching. Their aim is to foster a better knowledge of our natural world and how it works, encouraging the joy of knowledge about the Earth in those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to receive it. They produce weekly, practical Earth-related activities aimed at age groups between 8 and 18. All require minimal equipment.

Travel Buster

Environmental Protection UK are launching a free online teaching resource called the Travel Buster which is aimed at raising awareness of the impacts of travel on health, air and noise pollution to children aged 7-11 years old. The Travel Buster asks pupils how they travel to and from school over one week and how far they travel and uses animation and sounds to demonstrate the impact their choices have on their health and their local environment. It then gives them a rating based on their choices and the option to print off a pledge form, where they can pledge to improve how they travel.

Geography Directory 2007

Created by Rob Chambers, this PDF file is a directory of weblinks and resources to support the teaching and learning of Geography. It has been compiled from a variety of resources including amongst others, suggestions/recommendations made by fellow geography teachers on the SLN website. Unfortunately, it does not seem to have been updated since 2007, nevertheless it should still be a highly useful resource.

The Directory can be found on the Geobytes website - see also www.geobytes.org.uk.
