Resources Front Page

This area of the website may have changed since you last visited. We have now categorised many of the resources from this section into three phase areas - Early Years & Primary, Secondary and Post 16 & HE - each with its own green button on the menu bar.

All cross-phase resources remain in this section.

Educational Resources on China

New learning resources to accompany the RGS-IBG exhibition on China entitled 'Seeing China: Community Reflections' have recently been added to the popular Unlocking the Archives website for schools.

The resources are called 'China – Snapshots in Time' and target the Key Stage 2 and 3 Geography and History curricula and explore themes of exploration, migration and identity.

Each of the distinct learning themes on the site features fact sheets providing background information, associated downloadable activities and a gallery of archive images for use within the classroom.

Further information about educational resources, creative workshops and free exhibition hire for schools can be obtained by emailing the Education Officer or calling on 020 7591 3057.

Learn Zone at WaterAid

Learn Zone is a new free teaching resource for primary and secondary schools from WaterAid. Most of the resources here are linked to the geography, PSHE and citizenship curriculums and explore a range of global issues around access to clean, safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. These bright and colourful resources include engaging activities such as role-play and enquiry mysteries and much more. Learners can also interact with a range of media resources from slideshows, films and games to real people's stories and images. Geography teachers will also find useful a set of full colour country information sheets.

Farm Visit Learning Days

A range of new materials is now available for teachers, schools, and farmers to help deliver the national curriculum and enable children to learn about food, farming, and the natural environment. The 'Farm Visits Learning Day' consists of a number of lesson plans and accompanying materials for Key Stage 2. The materials aim to help pupils to get the most out of a farm visit by having a day devoted to the subject in the classroom prior to visits.
Farm Visits Learning Day

The Learning Day has been produced by Learning Days Ltd as part of the Year of Food and Farming, and is sponsored by Natural England and The Co-operative. It aims to support the use of the outdoors as a classroom and improve children's knowledge about how food is produced and where it is from.

Year of Intercultural Dialogue Project Kits

To celebrate the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, two new eTwinning project kits have been developed for schools to run projects on this featured topic. As eTwinning is already deeply imbedded in intercultural dialogue with schools across Europe, these kits have been created to give schools ideas on how to create eTwinning activities around this topic. The first kit provides an easy and fun way to discuss intercultural dialogue using body language while the second kit focuses on the issue of migration.

Find the project kits at the eTwinning website.

Every Journey Matters

Every Journey Matters is a website based upon the book of the same name which was written and designed by a team of young people at Peace Child International. The website explores how young people around the world get to school. There are downloadable KS2 lesson plans which explore the issue of sustainable transport. As well as being full of lots of interesting facts, this attractive site also features games, quizzes and competitions for young people.

Climatetalk

Climatetalk is a game in which people are encouraged to hold rich conversations about the issues raised for them by climate change. It can be, and has been, used by schools to help develop children's understanding about the issues surrounding climate change.

Managing Flood Risk

On 14 January 2008 we launched a new section of the GA website - Managing Flood Risk - developed in conjunction with the Environment Agency.

The area features two UK-based case studies, with two more planned for the coming months.

Each case study has several pages of original material plus a wide range of downloadable resources including photographs, maps, ITN news footage, newspaper reports, Met Office data and Environment Agency information.

The materials are suitable for use with AS/A-Level students and each case study includes a set of classroom activities.

Carbon Game

The Field Studies Council has developed the Carbon Game, a carbon trading game for 13-18 year old students to provide stimulation for discussion on real solutions to climate change. It aims to help learners develop new ways of thinking which challenge the current approach to tackling climate change and lead to solutions which are fair and beneficial for all.

The game connects schools from seven EU countries competing in a pan-European carbon market.
Carbon Game

Schools registering to play the game are invited to enter teams of students for any of the four events which will take place at 10:00am on 4 December and 5 December, and 15 January and 16 January. Each game takes about 30 minutes to play and at the end of each game schools will be able to see how they rate compared with participating schools in Poland, Latvia, Cyprus, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria and others throughout the UK.

To get involved schools need to register on the website where full details on how to take part, teacher briefing notes and suggestions for follow up discussions are given.

The Grain Chain

This new website investigates the steps involved in transforming wheat into a range of food products (the 'grain chain') and also uses it as a starting point for exploring wider issues, such as farming in the UK, sustainable development and retailing. The materials are appropriate for ages 5-16 and the website includes a separate area for teachers.

Although not wholly geography in its focus, there are elements of the site which have been developed with geography teachers in mind, and have been reviewed by practising geography teachers during development. The teachers' area gives curriculum links for the different age groups, and there is a specific case study for geography in the 14-16s area.

DCSF Carbon Detectives Kit

The Carbon Detectives kit is a new online resource for pupils to help them calculate their school's carbon footprint and help them become more sustainable.

Pupils can use the online calculator to investigate the link between day-to-day actions in their school and climate change. Pupils sign up to be Carbon Detectives and work as part of a team to investigate their school's carbon footprint and from there, what action plans the whole school can put in place to help reduce it.
Visit the Carbon Detectives website

This tool is designed to be used by teams of pupils (Key Stage 2 or 3), helped by an adult facilitator (where needed). This can be a teacher, governor or a parent. This initiative aims to help schools and pupils understand sustainable development. Working with this tool they can contribute to healthy living, environmental awareness, community participation and global citizenship.
