Uckfield Case Study: 'My Story' Career Profiles

My Story - Samina Khan

Samina Khan Samina Khan

Uckfield was devastated by the floods of 12 October 2000. This was a traumatic experience for many people.

Since then we have been working towards reducing flood risk for people who live in Uckfield. We have looked at a number of possibilities. Each option has both positive and negative impacts. My training as a civil engineer has prepared me to develop and evaluate these options.

Engineering affects everything we do including how we manage flooding from rivers and the sea. Courses for engineers cover many different topics including geology, coastal and fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, surveying, environmental assessment and many other areas.

The Environment Agency sponsors a new flood management foundation degree. You can find more information about it on the University of the West of England website.

There's also a good introduction to engineering on the Enginuity website.
