Carlisle Case Study: 'My Story' Career Profiles

My Story - Michael Harper

January 2005 saw some of the worst floods in England and Wales for the last few decades with Carlisle badly affected. We are working on a flood defence scheme to improve the standard of protection. This was already in the planning stages when the floods came and work on the River Eden and Petteril Flood Alleviation Scheme began in May 2006.

We are reconstructing and raising embankments, making them wider and higher. We have to ensure that the materials we use fit in with the local environment and we also will be creating a recreational area to attract wildlife and improve the Old Eden River to create a better environment for fish and aquatic life.

Studying engineering has helped me play a part in bringing benefits to people and the environment that make a real difference.

The Environment Agency sponsors a flood management foundation degree. You can find more information about it here.
