Bewdley is a small Georgian town on the River Severn in Worcestershire. The River Severn has played a major part in its development as a centre for trade, and more recently tourism. Bewdley has many historic and picturesque buildings which over the centuries have spread along the river frontage and into the flood plain where they are at constant risk of flooding.
Bewdley Case Study: What happened in the 2000 Bewdley floods?
October, November and December 2000 were the wettest autumn months in England and Wales for 270 years. Heavy rainfall in the Welsh Mountains caused a surge of water to pass down-river along the Severn Valley. Bewdley was one of the towns most severely hit by the floods that resulted. Water levels were 5.3 metres above summer levels. The town was extensively flooded three times in the space of six weeks - the worst flooding for over 50 years. It was obvious action needed to be taken.
