The catchment of the River Ouse is in Sussex, rising in the hills of the Weald and reaching the sea at Newhaven. Upstream of the town of Lewes, the rural floodplains of the Ouse and tributaries such as the River Uck are regularly flooded.
But as far back as 1852 there are records of flooding of the river in the town of Uckfield. In more recent times, Uckfield was flooded on three occasions in 2000. In the most severe event on 12 October, a small intense rainstorm over the catchment caused serious flooding up to 2m deep in the town centre.
