Updated 16.06.08

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Sichuan in China on Monday 12 May 2008 at approximately 14:28 local time. Current media reports state that 12,000 people have died, but with many more thousands still trapped, it is likely that the death toll will continue to rise.

Links to news reports are available below, and generic earthquake resources can be found further down the page, accumulated at the time of the UK earthquake earlier this year.

Edu4hazards - Education for Disaster Risk Reduction (16.06.08)

Following the China earthquake, a group of students have produced a film about what to do in the event of an earthquake. The finished film can be viewed at TeacherTube or at the edu4hazards channel on YouTube, along with a number of other videos related to disaster risk reduction all produced by students. The stimulus for the films came in the form of the website edu4hazards which contains useful information regarding effective response to six major geo-hazards, including earthquakes. In addition to this site, there is a new international social network called Edu4drr, designed for teachers who want to make a difference in disaster prevention.

UK Earthquake - 27 February 2008

On Wednesday 27 February at 00:56, the British Geological Survey (BGS) recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 (ML) on the Richter scale near Market Rasen, Lincolnshire.

This was the largest earthquake in the UK since the magnitude 5.4 ML Lleyn Peninsula quake in 1984, which was widely felt across England and Wales.

The links below have been compiled to help you find news reports, data and teaching resources as quickly as possible.
