Valuing Places - The People
A range of people are involved in the Valuing Places at a variety of levels including: a GA Co-ordinating Group, Regional Co-ordinators and Geography Teachers at key stages 2 and 3.
There is a very strong professional development emphasis for everyone involved. The creative involvement of teachers in developing appropriate curriculum materials will be as important as the materials themselves.

I am honoured to be part of this project and urge everyone else to get involved.'

I have long-term interests in various aspects of the theorization of 'space' and 'place'. These interests range through globalization (critique of), regional uneven development, the reconceptualization of place … and from the philosophical and largely conceptual through to the directly political. I co-founded and now co-edit Soundings: a journal of politics and culture.

I am a Plymouth Geography AST, based at Plymouth High School for Girls. The Valuing Places project is a unique opportunity for key stage 2 and key stage 3 teachers to work on geography in the curriculum together. We have so much to learn from each other, and the sooner we can convince managers in schools that almost the entire curriculum can be delivered through geography, the better.

I was delighted to be invited to join the Valuing Places project. While not from a geographical background, this project resonates closely with my current work at a Development Education Centre (Kent and the Wider World), reflecting similar methodologies and concerns. I hope my experience as an ESOL teacher and involvement with community arts and environmental projects will also contribute to this dynamic and exciting research.

One significant feature of Valuing Places is the opportunity for teachers involved in geographical education to engage with each other in professional consideration of their classroom activities. The sub-text could be 'valuing teachers' and an encouraging sign that collective work has genuine validity at a time when the local structures to support it have barely survived.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to be involved in a national project - Valuing Places. As a Head of Geography, lead teacher in Herefordshire and Advanced Skills Teacher in Initial Teacher Training, I have worked alongside trainees and experienced teachers across the key stages and enjoyed seeing a wide range of skills, ideas and innovative teaching strategies generated in the classroom. I am in no doubt that it is important to have high quality, up-to-date resources to motivate and engage pupils in the classroom and I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm, working with teachers in the region, to support a project, which has learning in the classroom as the focal point.

I have been Geography Co-ordinator, Head of Year and Careers Co-ordinator in a variety of middle and secondary schools. At present I am responsible for supporting teachers and schools as the Education for Sustainable Development Officer for Worcestershire, I also lecture in Primary Geography at University College Worcester and I am on the board of trustees at TIDE (Birmingham DEC). The theme of place is investigated in a number of curriculum areas in schools but these tend to focus on a specific place with only minimal reference to its place within the world. Mutual dependence and inter-connectedness are a vital area to be explored within the curriculum. This is a real opportunity for pupils to expand their horizons through and beyond their local area.

I am currently Head of Geography at Helsby High School, a large mixed 11-18 comprehensive school. I have been involved in liaison with local primary schools and have set up a working group developing geographical ideas across the key stage 2-3 interface running seminars for teachers. I instituted and published my own classroom-based research on the impact of mind-friendly learning, and would like to encourage more teachers to carry out their own research. I think this is an exciting project because children need a sense of place. Building from their current knowledge they are better able to make sense of world events and have a clearer understanding of the world through connecting with real places. I believe that geography should be at the centre of the school curriculum, and a sense of place at the centre of geography.

Since January 2005, I have been the Training & Development Officer for SureStart Cheshire. I am responsible for running a CPD programme for the staff of Nurseries, pre-schools, Out of School Clubs, and Childminders, etc. Prior to this, I ran an Environmental Education Centre. A lot of my work has been with teachers and children exploring new places and comparing them to the ones they know. To me, geography is how I think about the world and I enjoy opening other people’s minds to the similarities, differences and interconnectedness between us all. I am looking forward to working with Early Years practitioners, parents and young children to develop their sense of belonging to a place, and being connected to others.
