1. Calculate rankings and use the results to construct scatter graphs for past Games.
2. At the conclusion of the Beijing Games use relevant data, i.e. medal points tally and total population for 2008, to draw a scatter graph to show the relationship between medal points tally and total population size (by ranking) for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Draw a line of best fit ensuring there are approximately equal numbers of results above and below the line.
3. Assess how the performance of different countries has changed since Seoul 1988. Hint: look at their position in relation to the line of best fit. Look also for clusters of countries and if/where different countries have moved.
4. What factors might explain the success of different countries at the Olympics over this period of time?
5. Suggest reasons to explain improvement or decline in Olympic performance over a period of time. What explanations can be given for such trends? Consider, for example, countries such as China, Cuba, South Korea, Hungary and Greece.
