Medal Mapping: Activities One

Going further

1. Use medal points data for Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Athens 2004 together with world outline map to construct distribution maps similar to Sydney 2000 Medal Points Tally Map.

2. Explain and account for changing patterns of medal distribution and success at recent Olympic Games. In addition to the worksheets and medal points data provided, access relevant weblinks as part of your research.

3. Go to the Olympic Statistics website to access medal points data for all past Olympic Games from Athens 1896 to Athens 2004, including medal points tallies for individual sports and all events contested at successive Olympic Games.

4. Develop geographies of different sports at the Olympic Games such as track and field, swimming, rowing, gymnastics, fencing, cycling and boxing.

5. Write a feature article for a newspaper or magazine that explores the probability of different countries (or athletes) winning medals in particular sports at the Beijing Games. Use examples and data from past Olympic Games to support your conclusions.

6. Use data from this website to draw a line graph showing Great Britain's and Australiass medal points tally for the past ten Olympics (from Mexico 1968 to Athens 2004). Describe the trend evident by your graph. Keep in mind the medal points total for each Games. Consider including other countries such as China on your graph.
