Unit B: Tallying the Medals (12-15)

By Jeana Kriewaldt

Medals

The Olympic Games afford opportunities for students to consider the global significance of who competes and why, and the links between participation, development and wealth. In completing these activities students will develop skills in data interpretation. An exploration of the values that underpin participation in the Olympics would complement these activities (see Unit D, pp.33-40). These may include how resources are allocated within countries, the extent to which sporting achievement contributes to social capital, the goal to strive for success, and the value of fair play - competing with integrity.
