Furthering the learning and teaching of geography

Pilot GCSE: People as Consumers - Argumentation and consumption

As part of the Why Argue? projects we have been developing the tool of argumentation. This is intended to encourage candidates to refine their own thinking and understanding by exploring other perspectives can be applied to consumerism.

A number of websites help to promote argumentation, these include Richard North’s and Living Issues. (These sites are appropriate for use with AS and A2 candidates.) Although the text may be inaccessible to some candidates the text inaccessible it can be copied and pasted into Word and edited.

Candidates can use counter-arguments worksheets to record their arguments against Richard North’s viewpoint. Their sources of information could quite simply be themselves or resources you provide. Use this approach to introduce issues connected with consumerism or at any point in the learning programme to refine understanding.

The web enquiries on the geography pages of the Staffordshire Learning Net offer a potential source for developing materials related to consumerism. The key stage 3 enquiry ‘Flowers from Kenya’ and the AS enquiry on Nike can be adapted for use in investigating consumerism.
