Pilot GCSE: Option 1 - Coastal Management

This optional unit, prepared by Chris Durbin, supports candidates in thinking about the ways that coasts can be managed.

While some people believe coastal processes should be controlled, others think that nature should be left to take its course. Here, Chris uses a variety of place studies to enable candidates to explore a range of management options.

This is a predominately academic unit. It has an emphasis on investigating the physical, environmental and human processes which interact at the coast, and considering the variety of management responses that have been developed.

The unit includes opportunities for candidates to explore their personal reactions to coastal landscapes and to present their ideas and feelings in creative ways. Vocational elements, such as managing health and safety, are also covered together with political aspects related to the environment.

A useful summary of the unit and more of Chris’s ideas and plans can be downloaded below.
