Furthering the learning and teaching of geography

PIlot GCSE - Background

The Pilot GCSE specification has been developed as an outcome of a QCA Geography and History development project. An early paper by the GA’s GeoVisions Working Party outlined what an innovative GCSE could look like.

QCA then convened a development group, which included representatives from each of the awarding bodies. Intensive and purposeful discussions resulted in the construction of a framework, which incorporated the group’s aspirations for a Hybrid Geography GCSE. OCR was awarded the contract to develop the framework into a pilot specification.

The GeoVisions Group see this Pilot GCSE as a timely and significant contribution to ensuring geography's relevance and dynamism in the curriculum. It is intended to build on pupils’ locational knowledge and geographical understandings developed by prior experiences and has an emphasis on relevant geography for twenty-first century citizens.
