Making Geography Happen

King Edward VI Five Ways School

King Edward VI Five Ways School is a successful grammar school in the suburbs of Birmingham. In 2008 100% of students gained 5+ A*-C GCSEs. The school has specialist status in Humanities which is Geography led, supported by History. It has also been recognised as a Centre of Excellence by the Geographical Association's Secondary Geography Quality Mark scheme.

The classes featured here are in Year 9 and studied uneven development in their final term after investigating population issues, the Asian Tsunami and hazardous environments.

Paula Cooper can be seen teaching a Key Stage 3 lesson in the 11-19 area of the GA website. She is also the author of 'For Richer and Poorer? A study of uneven development', part of the GA's forthcoming GCSE Toolkit series. Many of the ideas trialled for this project have been used in the book.
