Making Geography Happen

North Reddish Junior School

North Reddish Junior School is a mixed Primary Community School, which is slightly larger than average with one and a half, two and three form entry and approximately 238 pupils on roll.

The majority of the pupils' ethnic origin is White British. A very small number of pupils are learning English as an additional language. The socio-economic status of the pupils' families varies considerably as the children increasingly attend from a wide geographical area, hence the children range from advantaged to disadvantaged. The school provides for a higher than average number of children with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.

The school set in a residential area only 2/3 miles from Stockport centre and the immediate area surrounding the school is very built up. Although the Junior school is separate to the Infants, they are in close proximity. The school is surrounded by a playground which has been modernised with a number of playground games and activities such as a trim trail, traverse wall, Astroturf football pitch and a Harmony Zone.

About this class

The class involved in the project is a mixed year 4/5 class. There are 28 children in the class, 14 from each year group. Three of the children are on the Special Needs Register

Every theme that the class has studied was new to school as it was unknown whether the children would be in a mixed class the following year. This has meant that everything is new, fresh and exciting for both the children and the teacher. The children were therefore able to help choose the themes and plan the content. The class is very calm but remains enthusiastic and the children become very involved in their learning. The class has good team work skills and thrives in group activities.
