Ethos
To make geography lessons interesting, varied and active at all levels to foster learning and generate enthusiasm for geography.

Key Stage 3 Courses
Two 55 minute lessons per week throughout key stage 3

Year 7 - Hazards, map skills, water and rivers, economic activity, Transport.

Year 8 - Cities and people, more map skills, Europe and Italy, coasts, Environmental issues.

Year 9 - Ecosystems (focus on Africa), Weather, Global tourism, Population, Globalisation (focus on sport)ICT Assessment on Economic Development in MEDCs and LEDCs.

Core Texts
No core text but we make use of: Geography Matters 1 (Hopkin, Heinemann), Think Through Geography 1 and 2 (Hilary et al., Longman)Key Geography 1 and 3 (Waugh and Bushell, Nelson).

GCSE
OCR B (Avery Hill) 130 to 160 students per year group in six to eight mixed ability groups.

No core text but we make use of: Problem solving practice (Brooker et al., Heinemann), Climate, Environment and People (Cambers and Currie, Heinemann), Decision Making Exercises for GCSE (Goddard, Nelson)Exam Revision Notes (Ferretti and Greasley, Philip Allan Updates).

Course study: Traffic management or Quality of Life in Broomhall (inner city Sheffield)Cross unit task: Should quarrying in the Peak District be expanded? (focus on Stanton Moor quarry, near Bakewell).

A-Level
Edexcel Specification B - 40 to 45 in year 12 (AS), 30 to 35 in Year 13 (A2).

Fieldwork
Year 7 - One day visit to Burbage Valley, Derbyshire looking at the course of the river.

Year 8 - A one day visit either to Spurn Point and Holderness or to Museum of Science and Technology, Manchester.

Year 11 - Inner city problems in Broomhall, Sheffield (focus on traffic problems and quality of life).

Year 12 - Five day residential visit to Swanage, Dorset.

Year 12 - Half day visit to Netherthorpe, Sheffield (urban regeneration in the inner city).

Ethos
Our basic aim in the geography department is to make learning interesting and fun. We aim to challenge our students at all levels to extend themselves and to think about the issues we cover. We have developed our teaching to take on many aspects of the Key Stage 3 Strategy, which will further engage our students.

Our hope is that all students will develop a life-long interest in geography and will continue to learn about the world they live in long after they have left school.

Year 7 - Local Region, Mapwork, Weather and climate, Industry

Year 8 - Tectonic Processes, Italy, River and landforms, Kenya, and Development

Year 9 - Environmental Management, Ecosystems, Living in hostile environments, Population, Settlement.

All units are tested using internally produced assessments which give an overall balance of skills, knowledge and understanding to enable accurate national curriculum levelling.
