Background to the Innovation Project
Rotherham and Sheffield LEAs, in collaboration with Birmingham, Tower Hamlets and Islington LEAs have been working together (using funding from the Excellence in Cities initiative) to develop the concept of identifying and recognising Lead Departments. The Lead Departments Innovation Project was introduced as a pilot with science departments in 2000. The success of the pilot meant that it was extended to include geography departments in 2003. It presently involves schools in three LEAs: Redcar and Cleveland, Salford, and Sheffield.

Following consultation between the five initiating LEAs, Lead Department standards criteria were developed. The criteria was further amended for geography by a team from the three LEAs and David Lambert, Chief Executive of the GA. Details of the standards criteria and possible sources of evidence specific to geography can be accessed through the links on the left.
Geography departments in five schools in the three LEAs will be working with partner schools during course of the Project. Details of each Lead Department, including the department’s ethos, the geography courses followed (including core texts), coursework and fieldwork can be accessed through the links on the left.
