GeogEd

Welcome to GeogEd, the Geographical Association's new online journal.

GeogEd publishes original draft articles reporting research in the field of geographical education. GeogEd differs from other journals in that the articles in it are not completed articles but 'work in progress'. It is hoped that they can be refined and developed with a view to submitting for full publication in other refereed academic journals.

The articles in GeogEd will be of interest to those involved in teacher education, to teachers of geography and to students on PGCE and Higher Degree courses.

  • Volume 1 Issue 1 (Autumn 2007)

GeogEd seeks to support the professional development of geography HEI tutors in their role as researchers into geographical education. This role includes critiquing existing policy and practice and taking geographical education forward through new thinking, through research and through new ways of looking at what is happening. To be of value to others the new knowledge and understanding generated through research need to be communicated through publication. For those new to research and publishing, the process of carrying out research and writing for academic journals can seem a daunting prospect.

GeogEd will provide an opportunity for researchers to publish first drafts of articles and to receive comments from referees, and from readers of GeogEd, on how these drafts might be developed for publication in academic journals. It is intended that the articles and the referees' reviews will provide support and encouragement not only for the author but also for others who want to carry out research into geographical education and publish articles based on it.

GeogEd will be supportive to new researchers, including students, at an early stage of their careers. It values opening up the policy and practice of geographical education to scrutiny and debate. It will provide a forum for discussing tentative ideas arising from research and, hopefully, will generate discussion among the geography education community.

The role of research in geographical education and possible areas for research are explored in the GTIP Orientation Piece 'Research'.

Advice for researchers on the process of writing for publication can be found in the GTIP Orientation Piece 'Getting Published'.
