New GA Chief Executive announced

New GA Chief Executive announced

The Trustees of the Geographical Association are delighted to announce the appointment of Alan Kinder to the post of GA Chief Executive effective from 1 September 2012. From a strong field of applicants representing a range of educational, commercial and third sector backgrounds, a small number of impressive candidates were invited to take part in a rigorous two-day selection process at the GA's offices in Sheffield. Although the final decision was a very close one, at the end of this process the selection panel was unanimous in its choice of Alan Kinder as the next GA Chief Executive. The GA's Trustees and staff are very much looking forward to working with Alan. (23.05.12)

GA Annual Monitoring Report

The first GA Annual Monitoring Report on Geography Education has just been published. The report focuses on the overall condition of geography in England and includes detailed examination results and a round up of the GA's policy work over the last year. (16.05.12)

Congratulations to the following GA members who have been elected by the GA membership to serve on the Governing Body from 1 September 2012. Mark Higginbottom: Junior Vice President 2012-13, to serve as Senior Vice President 2013-14, President 2014-15 and Past President 2014-15. Alan Marvell: Elected Member 2012-15. Review of standards in A-level geography

Review of standards in A-level geography

Ofqual have announced the results of their review into A-level geography standards. The review compared 2010 and 2001 specifications and assessment across five awarding bodies. It found improvements such as more demand for extended writing, and some areas of concern such as less physical geography and fewer opportunities to assess students' skills. (11.05.12)

GA Chief Executive to stand down

GA Chief Executive to stand down

After ten years as Chief Executive of the GA, Professor David Lambert will be standing down at the end of July 2012. David will become full time Professor of Geography Education at the Institute of Education in London, where he has worked part time since 2007. (23.03.12)

GCSE assessment changes ahead

GCSE assessment changes ahead

Ofqual is reviewing face to face seminars and the role of controlled assessment in GCSEs. Teachers will be asked to give their views and outcome of the review will be published in autumn. Ofqual will look at the practicalities of delivering controlled assessment and the advice and guidance provided to schools. (30.04.12)

Free residential course for geographers

Free residential course for geographers

Secondary geography teachers can now apply now for a free place on 'Science for Society: New Developments in Physical Geography', a six-day residential training course taking place from 15-20 July 2012. The course includes tuition by Southampton University, visits to the Ordnance Survey and the Met Office and a Gala Dinner at Goldsmith's Hall in London. (11.04.12)
