Since September 2007 the Year of Food and Farming has been helping children to find out more about the countryside and where their food comes from. Now it is drawing to an end, they are asking teachers that have taken part in the 'Year' to complete a quick and simple survey by 1 August 2008. The survey should only take you a couple of minutes to complete. Keep visiting the Year of Food and Farming website for details of new and exciting opportunities for schools in the new academic year.

The winning scripts from the Teachers TV Staffroom Monologues competition have now been filmed and are available to view on the Teachers TV channel. Staffroom Monologues seeks to find great writers in the world of education. In March 2008 they asked entrants to write a fictional monologue between 800 and 1,000 words in length on any aspect of school life, from the perspective of someone who works in a school.

WaterAid have launched Learn Zone, their new online resource for primary and secondary schools. The launch, which took place at the Royal Geographical Society, was celebrated by an interactive workshop with a reverse graffiti artist assisted by children from several schools. Also present were the winners of the recent H2O Reporter competition. The resources in the Learn Zone are linked to the geography, PSHE and citizenship curriculums.

Congratulations to Excellent Development for being chosen Charity of the Year at the UK Charity Awards 2008. Excellent Development works on sustainable development projects in Africa and in addition works to enhance development education in the UK and worldwide. Excellent Development co-hosted a workshop with the GA International Working Group at this year's Annual Conference. The Geographical Association International Initiatives Fund promotes educational initiatives involving individuals and associations concerned with geographical education worldwide. Awards are available each year for individual geographical educators to visit the UK or for GA members to travel to exchange ideas of good practice in teaching and learning. On Wednesday 11 June, Prime Minister Gordon Brown backed DEA's call for more global learning to take place in schools across England. In Global Matters, a new DEA publication, the Prime Minister wrote a foreword which emphasises his commitment to young people learning about global issues and the impact that their own actions has on people in other countries.

If so, it's not too late to sign up for Shine, the national festival celebrating and showcasing the talents in all young people which will take place on the 30 June - 4 July. Create a Shine web page for your school or organisation to showcase events or start a blog and upload young people's work. The CfBT website is hosting a series of Hot Seat Web Casts to help answer your questions and discuss topics on implementing the new secondary curriculum in your school. From Monday 9 June to Friday 20 June the national subject leads for geography will be online at least once a day to respond to your questions and discussions through the forum pages. You can log in as many times as you like to review answers and add further questions.

GCSEs are being redeveloped and reaccredited, as part of the wider 14-19 education reform programme. Edexcel is looking for outstanding individuals to develop their new specifications and lead a team of examiners and/or moderators, for their new specification in Geography.
