Walking four miles is the daily task faced by millions of people in developing countries just to collect enough water for a family’s basic requirements. Schools across the UK are being encouraged to take part in the Turn On The Tap Challenge by organising their own four mile walk on or around May 10 2008, and also by introducing some of the lesson plans (Primary and Secondary) that have been developed as an integral part of the campaign.

The British Cartographic Society has launched a redesigned website. New sections include 'About Cartography' which features information on mapmaking and careers in cartography, the BCS Forum for use by the general public as well as those in the cartographic community, a Junior MapMakers section, gallery and much more.

Staffroom Monologues 2008, a national competition to find the staffroom's best dramatists, opens on Monday 18 Feburary.
School staff who are budding screenwriters, or simply have an interesting story to tell, can win the chance of having their script performed by an actor for a special Teachers TV series Staffroom Monologues. To enter, simply submit a single character fictional monologue of between 800 and 1,000 words by 25 March 2008 on any aspect of school life from the perspective of someone who works in a school.
The competion is being run by Teachers TV, in partnership with the National Union of Teachers. For more information see the Teachers TV website.

Their new online town EfficienCity uses interactive case studies and animation to demonstrate how the UK could reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by using 'decentralised energy', a clean and efficient energy system that provides heating, cooling and electricity to the community.

E-Base Goes Live. Legendary polar explorer, environmental leader and public speaker Robert Swan, OBE, the first person in history to walk to both the North and South Poles, will make history again as he returns to Antarctica in March 2008. He will live solely on renewable wind and solar energy for two weeks at Antarctica's first dedicated educational base, highlighting the importance of sustainable energy sources and the preservation of the last great wilderness on the planet.
A special project website E-Base Goes Live will be launching on 22 February 2008, providing teachers and pupils globally with multimedia content and educational resources. The site will host the daily video dispatches and galleries of the E-Base mission as the team search for solutions to tackle climate change and share what life on the white continent is really like.

Now is your chance to take part in the Geographical magazine's Young Geographer of the Year 2008, a competition that aims to inspire and encourage the next generation of geographers, travellers and explorers. Take part in the Royal Meteorological Society's MetLink International weather project from 3-17 March 2008. Join hundreds of schools around the world entering daily weather observations into the project database on the MetLink website. By recording weather data daily and sharing with others via the internet, the project aims to help participants develop weather projects, plot graphs, compare results and write articles about weather events.
