Action Plan for Geography - Support Strand

The support strand will provide resources, guidance and training for teachers, targeted on Primary and Key Stage 3, plus support in specific areas of the curriculum.

There will be opportunities for teachers to engage with subject leadership and curriculum making. These projects will offer face to face and online support – at primary and secondary levels – on planning and developing the curriculum.

Participants will design relevant and enjoyable geography programmes that allow for local circumstances, and build in progression and personalised learning. The projects are for all teachers of geography and encourage developments in ICT, citizenship or sustainable development.

Enhancing the teaching and learning of geography at school

Courses to support geography teaching - Curriculum Making

Over the next two years, 600 teachers can participate in excellent curriculum making activities. These will be focused on your school and your needs, supported by recent and relevant resources and up to date information. You can choose your course according to location and cross-cutting theme.

Aim

To support all teachers of geography to develop informed, relevant and enjoyable learning activities that help learners to succeed in geography.

Objectives

  • To provide practical guidance on current developments in geography education
  • To explore different resources and strategies appropriate to each cross-cutting theme
  • To become even more confident about the significance of geography education to the wider education of young people
  • To exchange views and experiences with others

The use of cross-cutting themes will enable us to show how geography contributes to the wider education of all young people. The themes are:

  • Education for sustainable development
  • Citizenship
  • ICT
geography lesson

Geography's potential to develop cross-cutting themes comes from:

  • Its ability to link learning in class with young peoples' 'real' experiences of their locality and to extend this through links and interconnections between local and global scales
  • Its focus on real places and landscapes; on understanding identity differences and diversity, and the importance of location
  • Its ability to convey an understanding of the causes of change in our world through the knowledge on underlying environmental, social and economic processes
