Action Plan For Geography - Getting Involved
There are a number of ways in which you can participate in the Action Plan for Geography and it is vital that you do! The APG is for whole geography community, it is not about ‘experts’ telling others what to do. It is about all of us, engaging with and participating in a community that shares effective practice. There is no ‘they’ in the APG, just us.
- It almost goes without saying that your continued GA membership is vital to us, without it we would not have been able to develop the Action Plan for Geography activities. Encourage others in your locality to join too.
|
|
- If you have a view to voice, a resource to exchange, an idea to share, an experience to describe then the discussion areas on the forthcoming Geography Teaching Today website are for you.
- You may like to use the resource Himalaya by Michael Palin to develop geography in your school – a free copy will be sent to all secondary schools during the Autumn term.
- If you want to shout about the importance of geography, here are a few ideas to help you talk to key people:
|
- You may like to use the CPD units which we'll be adding to the Geography Teaching Today website to promote geography in your school, with your colleagues, with SMT and your governors.
- On 10th July 2007 and 10th July 2008 there will be a ‘Geography 21’ conference. These will be open to all those interested in developing the curriculum for Key Stage 4. As a taster for this work, you may want to take part in the virtual conference which will be taking place during the last week in September and first week in October 2006. This conference aims to highlight the innovative approaches to geography that the pilot geography GCSE facilitates. Keep an eye on the GA website for further details.
|
An excellent way of getting involved with the Action Plan is by contributing to one of our Geography and Cross Cutting Theme Projects. Participation is free, and in recognition of the creative work that you will contribute you will be able to select a resource pack of materials published by the GA to support your school in furthering the teaching and learning of geography.
The projects include:
|
|
- Primary and Secondary Geography Quality Marks. These are amazingly powerful tools to help you to celebrate quality in geography education. They are linked to the OFSTED Self-Evaluation Form (SEF) and support the TDA’s new Professional Standards for Teachers. If you would like to find out more about the Primary Geography Quality Mark then please email Wendy North, and for the Secondary Geography Quality Mark email Justin Woolliscroft.
- There are several projects which use the primary and secondary national Strategy materials to promote quality geography. To facilitate these projects we will be inviting you to take part in advisory groups and in trialling materials.
- APG Extension Project – Primary and Early Years Handbooks
- APG Extension Project – The Secondary Geography Handbook
- Geography and the Primary Strategy
- Geography and the Secondary Strategy
- We will also be supporting innovator teacher groups to identify and develop cutting edge approaches to teaching within Key Stage 4. During the first year the focus will be on ‘Everyday Geography’.

The above projects recognise and celebrate high quality geography within schools and departments, but the Action Plan will also be providing the opportunity for individuals to be rewarded for their geographical achievements.
The RGS-IBG will be developing the Chartered Geographer status (CGeog). This is a professional status qualification for those who can demonstrate competence, experience and professionalism in the use of geographical knowledge or skills in the workplace, and who are committed to maintaining their professional standards through ongoing continuing professional development. For more on the Chartered Geographer qualification visit the RGS-IBG website.
In addition to the work of the RGS-IBG, the GA will be continuing and developing its relationship with the General Teaching Council in England's Teacher Learning Academy.
If you are studying to teach geography, undertaking your NQT year, or in your first three years of teaching, you can become a joint Early Career Teacher member of both the GA & RGS-IBG. This initiative has been developed as part of the Action Plan for Geography. Further details are available on the Geography Teaching Today website.
We will also be developing opportunities to have your curriculum development work recognised at Masters Level.
