Subscription Information

You can subscribe to one or more of the GA's journals

We have three membership categories:

Group membership is available to schools, colleges, university departments and other institutions that wish all their staff to have access to the benefits of membership.

Full personal membership is available to individuals.

Associate personal membership offers all the benefits of full membership for a reduced rate, and is available to:

  • Students: If you are a PGCE student, a full-time student in an institution of further and higher education or a senior pupil in a secondary school or sixth-form or tertiary college. Proof of studentship may be required.
  • Newly qualified teachers: This is available only during your first year of teaching. Future subscription/s will be for full personal membership.
  • Retired people: If you have either reached state retirement age or retired from employment.
  • Unwaged people: If you are unwaged. If you become employed you must take up personal full membership in the next subscription year.
  • International: If you are a member of a geography association outside England and Wales, you are entitled to join the Geographical Association at the Associate rate. International Associate membership includes all the normal benefits of GA membership with the exception of journals which are available online only. If you wish to receive paper copies of the journals please select the Full Personal rate.

Tax relief

GA Membership is approved by the Inland Revenue as a professional expense. If you intend to claim tax relief, you are advised to keep records when you make a payment. Confirmation of a previous years' subscription payment is available on request, but may be subject to an administration charge. If this is the first time you have claimed tax relief on your GA subscription you will need to write to your Tax Office. Download a draft letter (Word) (PDF).

Journals

When you join the GA you subscribe to one or more of our journals: Primary Geographer, Teaching Geography and Geography. To find out which journal best suits your needs, please access details of each one via the navigation bar on the left. If you're still not sure, why not request a free sample?

GA Magazine is sent free to every member regardless of their journal choice.

Your subscription will run for one year from the date of the receipt of your application. Our subscription rates are as follows:

Early Career Teacher membership package

As an element of the DfES funded Action Plan for Geography, the GA & RGS-IBG have jointly developed a new Early Career Teacher membership package aimed at supporting students and teachers of geography in the first five years of their career. Further details are available on the Geography Teaching Today website.

RGS-IBG reciprocal membership

Existing personal members of the GA are now entitled to RGS-IBG reciprocal membership. Benefits include access to relevant RGS-IBG resources in support of working towards the Chartered Geographer (Teacher) professional accreditation and the right to use FRGS (Fellow of the RGS-IBG) in your title. An additional annual subscription of £40 applies, excluding any CG(T) application fees. Download further details and application form (Word) (PDF).
