Frederick Soddy Trust

This year five schools have won Frederick Soddy Awards:

  • St Louis Catholic Middle School, Bury St. Edmunds
  • Cockshut Hill Technology College, Birmingham
  • The City Academy, Bristol
  • Hannah More Primary School, Bristol
  • Thomas Walling Primary School, Newcastle Upon Tyne

  • Around one hundred pupils from Thomas Walling Primary School were treated to a special field trip along the north-east coast. They walked from Bamburgh to Seahouses, visited Alnwick Castle and sailed out to the Farne Islands!

Deputy Head Derek Gott sent a thank you letter to the Trust, together with a report produced by the pupils. An adapted version is available here.

If you feel inspired by Thomas Walling's fieldtrip, why not apply for a Frederick Soddy Award for your school?

    Field Study Awards for Schools

The Frederick Soddy Trust, with the support of the GA, has launched its annual Award Scheme for schools.

The Frederick Soddy Trust was established in 1957 under the terms set out in the will of the chemist and Nobel Laureate, Professor Soddy FRS. The Trust provides modest support for expeditions and fieldwork which include the 'study of the whole life of an area with major emphasis on the human community'.

Following the success of previous years' Award Schemes, the Trust wishes to continue to encourage pupils' interest in field study by providing financial support. Schools often find it difficult to compete successfully for funds from the main grant making bodies or to allocate their own financial resources to field studies. The Trust hopes to encourage field studies by providing support specifically for such work.

    The Award Scheme

    • The sum available annually is £2500.
    • Each year, the Trust will make five awards of between £250 and £500. Each award depends on the merits of the individual project.
    • The award is for a group (of any number) of pupils between 5 and 18 years of age: the Trust wishes to encourage pupils of all ages to take part in field studies.
    • There are two conditions attached to the awards: successful applicants must submit a report on the project by 31 January, and a statement acknowledging the Trust's support must be included in the report.
    • The winners will be announced in March each year. The awards will be presented at the GA's Annual Conference.

    How to apply

Download an Application Form. A case for an award must meet the purpose of the Trust and should be made in not more than 500 words. Judges will expect to see details of the proposed study plan, administrative arrangements including financial aspects, and evidence of the applicant's ability to safely manage and successfully carry out the proposed project.

A sub-committee of the Council of the GA will compile a short list of potential candidates from which the Frederick Soddy Trustees will make the final choice.

The application must be signed by both the person leading the project and the head teacher, and sent to the following address no later than 31 January:
