How do I get access to GIS Software?
ESRI is the world leading developer and supplier of GIS. ESRI software is available through Eduserv Chest, an organisation which acts as a focal point for the supply of software, data, information, training materials and other IT related products to educational institutions in the UK. Universities can subscribe to this scheme on an individual basis.
How do I know if my university subscribes to the scheme?
Email Johanna Fyfe to find out if you university already subscribes to this scheme and, if so, the contact on your campus who can make the software available to you.
What software is available?
Almost the complete range of ESRI software is available through this scheme. Only certain products with components from third-party companies are not available. You will need to check that the product you require is included in the option to which your university currently subscribes.
What does the software cost?
There are nine different package options, at different price points, giving access to different collections of ESRI software. The scheme represents excellent value for money as it gives around a 95% discount on commercial software prices. For more information on the options and their respective costs email Johanna Fyfe. If your university is already a member of the scheme then the contact for your site should provide you with information on the way the scheme is paid for within your particular university.
What can the software be used for?
The software may be used by any employee, student or other persons authorised by the Licensee for the purposes of the normal business of the Licensee's organisation, whether or not they are located on the Licensee's premises. Such use includes: teaching; research; personal educational development; administration and management of the business of the Licensee's organisation; and development work associated with the above. The software cannot be used for any training course or teaching programme to a commercial or government organisation.
What about training for me on the use of the software?
ESRI (UK) provides a broad range of training courses run on a regular basis. More information at www.esriuk.com/training. Participants in the Eduserv Chest scheme can get a 50% discount on the current list price of any course.
How do I get technical support?
You should contact the primary contact person in your university.
Can I take the software abroad for a project?
The Eduserv Chest scheme only provides for use of the software in the UK. In other countries, ESRI software is licensed locally by other parts of the ESRI business network and there are commercial or legal restrictions on taking the GIS software supplied through the CHEST agreement to other countries. Enquiries related to the use of ESRI software in other countries should be sent to Johanna Fyfe.
Can the software be used for paid-for research project work?
Not without prior permission arranged through Eduserv Chest and ESRI (UK). The software is provided at a significant discount on the basis that Universities will not be taking commercial advantage of ESRI’s intellectual property. For use on projects being paid for by an external organisation or government department, contact Johanna Fyfe for the ‘ESRI Software – Commercial Use Request Form’. If is deemed that it is inappropriate to use the currently licensed software for this project, it does not mean your project cannot go ahead but you will need to purchase the software at current normal commercial rates from ESRI (UK).
Can the software be used for the provision of paid for training courses offered to external commercial organisations?
No. The software is provided at a significant discount on the basis that Universities will not be taking commercial advantage of ESRI’s intellectual property. You will need to purchase the appropriate type and number of software licences from ESRI (UK) to provide commercial training courses.
Can the software be used for development of a product that will be sold commercially?
No. The software is provided at a significant discount on the basis that Universities will not be taking commercial advantage of ESRI’s intellectual property.
