Visual Geography: Frames for use with Geography Starter Activities

1. The nine number picture board - a question of ...

nine number picture board

The first good idea can be found on the Staffordshire Geography Learning Network

John Hamshaw from Silverdale School in Sheffield offered the first visual starter on the site 'A question of glaciation'. These starters provide an excellent way of engaging young people with the theme of the lesson. The purpose of starters being to warm up, to create the yearning to know more, to set objectives, to create delight. This is a PowerPoint Presentation.

N.B. To ensure that the hyperlinks in these PowerPoint files work correctly you will need to download them to your own computer. Right click over the hyperlinked text and choose 'save target as'. When you open the files from within your own computer the links should work correctly.

The frame is provided with all the animation links set up. Insert your chosen images into pages two to ten.

Two adapted examples of the frame:

More photographs of Uluru available for use in the classroom.

2. Look behind you what can you see?

The second good idea was based on the 'Hide & Reveal' feature found on many interactive whiteboards.

This is a PowerPoint version of the activity in which the hidden object is revealed when the mouse is clicked.

How to use the blank frame:

  • The frame is provided with all the animation links set up.
  • The pages are colour coded and are linked to coloured dots that can be found on the final map page.
  • Insert the same image on the first two pages, i.e. the purple pages. The images need to be placed in an identical position on each page for this activity to work.
  • Go to the first of the two pages - click on the image to select
  • Choose Draw (bottom right hand corner); then Order and send to the back.
  • The label 'Look behind you...' should appear on top. Manipulate the box until it fits over the part of the image you want to hide.
  • Click on the slide show to animate and see if it works.
  • Go to the map page - slide the button over the relevant country on the map. Alternatively change the world map for one more suited to your topic.
