Investigating the local area: Our town

Rachel Bowles

Image Sources

Google - click on ‘Images’ then enter your search term. This usually brings up a good selection of photographs, which may or may not be copyright free. Searching for ‘Market Towns’ brings up images and maps of small towns from every region in the UK.
James Miller - Images of Bury St Edmunds, free use for educational/private purposes.
St Edmundsbury Town Centre Management Strategy - More images of Bury St Edmunds; also gives details of changes in the town.

Map Websites

Cassini Maps - historical maps of England, Wales & Edinburgh which have been re-formatted to match OS Landrangers. You can also use the Cassini Mapmaker service to select any A4 or A3 area you want by town name or postcode.
Mapzone - This Ordnance Survey website for kids is very navigable, but you do need to give students directions and objectives. It also includes interactive games and resources.
Multimap- This site requires precise instructions and penalises users for straying into the business areas.
Old Maps - Search for 19th century maps by place name, address or co-ordinates.
AccuWeather - Satellite and symbol maps of the UK. Includes the facility to generate temperature, wind speed, and precipitation maps.
OS Get-a-map - Search for maps of any location in the UK using postcodes or place names. Students may need precise instructions regarding search terms and help with the zoom function.
BBC UK Weather - This site is easily navigable, but is more effective with precise instructions.
