Website showing a range of excellent photographs on mountains, both at home and overseas in a range of seasons and weather conditions. Children can use these to incorporate into their own presentations but they should acknowledge the photographer by name.

    This pack supports a variety of work on mountains by providing a range of pictures, maps, information and activities about the life of a Tibetan community.

  • Richardson, T. (2005) The Big picture – Mountains. BBC
    This set of materials from the BBC Big Picture series includes a Big Book, teachers’ notes and an e-book. Designed for key stage 2 pupils, the mountains book provides a range of high quality photographs with questions for discussion and an activity book. Would be suitable for some lessons with key stage 1 pupils.

  • Geographical Association/Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) (2000) Our Wonderful World posters. Sheffield: The Geographical Association.
    Two of these colourful posters in particular will be useful to support the topic of mountains: Mount Erebus, Antarctica and Karakoram Highway, Northern Pakistan

  • Doyle, M. and Greenfield, G. (2000) Owen and the Mountain.
    London: Bloomsbury Paperbacks.
    A story about a young boy, Owen, who visits his Grandad and wants to climb the mountain beyond the house. Grandad is old and not sure either of them can do it. The journey is long and tiring but they eventually both succeed, learning a little more about each other in the process.

  • Jackson, E. (2001) Barnaby Bear to the Rescue.
    Sheffield: The Geographical Association.
    Barnaby Bear goes out walking in Wales with his Dad and has to help with rescuing a little girl who has fallen and hurt herself. Lots of information about preparing to go walking in the mountains.

  • Jackson, E. (2003) Barnaby Bear Goes to Norway.
    Sheffield: The Geographical Association.
    Barnaby Bear and his parents are on holiday inside the Arctic Circle in Norway and Barnaby has the chance to learn about the landscape, life and customs in the Land of the Midnight Sun.A good introduction to a European mountainous environment.

  • Mangran, A. and Moss, J. (1998) The Smallest Bear.
    London: Little Tiger Press.
    A well illustrated book about Browny, a small bear who has to learn how to find honey on his own. An appealing story set in the woods on a mountainside.
