Geography from Square Two
The Geography from Square One poster, part-funded by the Frederick Soddy Trust and designed to help non-specialist primary teachers start to feel confident with geography, was a huge success - both the poster itself and the supporting materials on this website.
DfES funding now enables us to follow it up with 'Geography from Square Two' - more resource-focused materials, and additional support in the form of downloads and a photo bank on this website.
Courtesy of the Ordnance Survey, the Square Two poster will be mailed out to all primary schools with the Summer 2006 issue of Mapping News. A PDF of the poster is available to download below:

These line drawings of each region could be used in a variety of ways as a means for pupils to record their ideas. They can be coloured in, annotated – perhaps using the vocabulary cards provided - used for comparison purposes or for describing features within each photo. By sticking the drawings onto a larger A3 sheet, pupils may be able to extend the drawing beyond the frame. The map outline can be used to record the locations of featured photos and climate zones.
|
For descriptive work based on the photos. Each set has some blanks for additional suggestions and some 'red herrings' that don't belong to the particular climate zone to keep pupils on their toes!
|
This activity sheet encourages individual or group research into other places with similar climates to those in the four photos. It can be used in conjunction with the map and vocabulary cards.
|
These resource sheets accompany the activity detailed on the poster – matching speech bubble statements to the four climate zones.

These line drawings accompany the activity detailed on the poster – matching people, buildings, animals and vegetation to the four climate zones (beware of the red herrings too!).
