For primary geography co-ordinators

Visit the GA's Geography Subject Leaders area designed specifically for geography subject leaders in primary schools.

The Primary Geography Subject Leaders sections on QCA's Innovating with Geography website and the SLN Geography website are also useful.

A key resource for every primary school is the Primary Geography Handbook, packed with stimulating and inspiring material for Key Stage 1 and 2 geography. Prices start at just £22.99 for GA members.

Mapping News, the Ordnance Survey's magazine distributed three times a year to all schools and online.

Primary Subjects is published by the Council for Subject Associations and features pull out sections for every primary curriculum area. GA members can download the geography section from each issue free of charge.

ICT in primary geography

Becta produce an excellent leaflet Using web-based resources in primary geography.

For lessons combining primary geography with ICT, Technically Geography for Years 1/2, 3/4, 5/6.

Ictopus is a free support service for primary education and regularly features geography content.


Geography in nursery and reception classes

For ideas on holistic early learning experiences, an excellent resource is the Early Years Handbook: support for Practitioners in the Foundation Stage available from the GA's online shop.


Out of classroom activities

Fieldwork File – all about managing fieldwork safely plus a phase-specific booklet covering Early Years to KS2 with posters and teachers sheets.


Weblinks for pupils

The Ordnance Survey’s MapZone children's games section is particularly useful for fun mapwork.

Aerial photos and corresponding map extracts by postcode search or location are available online from Google Maps, the Ordnance Survey and MultiMap.

The Staffordshire LEA site - look under geography for lots of tried and tested ideas from schools which you can use on or off line.

A range of exemplars, useful ideas and Sammy the Seagull - a big book for KS1 are available via Kent Education.

The NASA site - the earth from space - awe and wonder via the pc! Good links with atlas work and environmental ideas like light pollution on Visible Earth and the BBC’s Barnaby Bear site.
