Furthering the learning and teaching of geography

Geography from Square One - What does good geography look like?

It expects pupils to act as geographical detectives, learning through geographical enquiry and problem solving, in small ways and big ways!

In good primary geography:

  • children act as detectives, learning through enquiry and problem solving (as in Global detectives)
  • topical issues and internet resources interest and motivate pupils (as in the Where in the world am I? activity)
  • a range of learning styles is evident: active, auditory, visual (as in Can you find me? and Features here and there)
  • children use and manipulate data, rather than just recording it
  • information is dealt with creatively, e.g. a cartoon to describe a river and what it does
  • children can apply skills, knowledge and concepts to different contexts
  • map and atlas games help children learn enjoyably, for example, Worldwise
  • teaching is planned with a basic expectation of demand related to the level description for your pupils' age and stage - should pupils be describing simply, or in greater detail? Making comparisons or explaining?

Geography from Square One was a Geographical Association project, supported by funding from The Frederick Soddy Trust and the DCSF
