Geography from Square One - Activities

Download the Geography from Square One poster

These activities are intended to get you thinking about geography. Hopefully, they will motivate you to have a go yourself.

Most can be adapted to suit children of any age in the primary school, and many can easily be developed into a complete unit of work.

For ease of use, each activity sheet indicates the key geographical ideas and skills encompassed.

Literacy Citizenship ICT and numeracy
  • developing speaking and listening skills
  • teaching and learning non-fiction genres, e.g. persuasive writing, balanced arguments and journalistic style
  • using the technical vocabulary associated with a subject or theme
  • highlighting opportunities for personal or local
  • involvement in community actions
  • expressing a personal point of view on environmental matters
  • taking responsibility for environmental decisions
  • data handling techniques

Whole school initiatives

For example, as part of the school's Improvement Plan, as one aspect of action towards gaining Eco School status, or as part of a bid to gain the Geographical Association's Primary Geography Quality Mark.

All this and more!

  • all pupils are engaged, whatever their ability
  • pupils' thinking skills are developed
  • they are given a context in which they can practise their social skills.
