Geography from Square One - Activities

These activities are intended to get you thinking about geography. Hopefully, they will motivate you to have a go yourself.

Most can be adapted to suit children of any age in the primary school, and many can easily be developed into a complete unit of work.

For ease of use, each activity sheet indicates the key geographical ideas and skills encompassed.

If you try some of these activities you’ll be promoting Excellence and Enjoyment, engaging in fun geography which relates to the Programme of Study for your key stage and making cross-curricular links to many other subject areas:

Literacy Citizenship ICT and numeracy
  • developing speaking and listening skills
  • teaching and learning non-fiction genres, e.g. persuasive writing, balanced arguments and journalistic style
  • using the technical vocabulary associated with a subject or theme.

  • highlighting opportunities for personal or local
  • involvement in community actions
  • expressing a personal point of view on environmental matters
  • taking responsibility for environmental decisions.

  • data handling techniques

  • Whole school initiatives

For example, as part of the school’s Improvement Plan, as one aspect of action towards gaining Eco School status, or as part of a bid to gain the Geographical Association’s new ‘Quality Mark’.

    All this and more!

    • all pupils are engaged, whatever their ability
    • pupils’ thinking skills are developed
    • they are given a context in which they can practise their social skills.
Have a go, and let us know how you got on! E-mail Marcia Foley.
