About the Champions

The Primary Geography Champions scheme forms part of the second phase of the DCSF sponsored Action Plan for Geography, and up to 54 Champions will be appointed by 2011 to lead and enthuse local networks of primary teachers.

To date we have an impressive list of 40 Champions in place, including the latest appointments made this year. Our Champions are a mix of (mostly) teachers, educators in ITE and LA and independent advisors. All of them are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and confident geographers of course! We are also lucky to have recruited Professor Iain Stewart as an honorary Primary Geography Champion.

Networking

The Champions hope to engage with at least 1500 primary teachers over the next three years and will work with you to ensure that geography retains its place amongst those curriculum areas that are characterised by excellence and enjoyment.

Visit the Primary Geography Champions Ning to meet our Champs, find out about networking activities taking place in your area, and interact with other teachers across the UK. Although registration is required, this is free and only takes a few seconds.

Find out more about the Champs Ning in the GA Magazine article 'Geography Champions - a glimpse behind the Ning' (PDF).

Local and Regional Events

Our Primary Champions regularly hold CPD events and offer free network meetings in their local areas - visit the Primary Geography Champions Ning for up to date listings.

Interactive Map

We already have a map showing the location and details of the Primary Champions (see above) but thought it would be great to have an interactive collaborative map that shows how support for, and confidence in, primary geography is spread across the UK. This will help us report about the needs of teachers in England to the DCSF and will also help the GA to target teacher support more effectively across the entire UK. Please do take the time to add your details - download our 'How To Guide' for step-by-step help. Many thanks!

Champ featured in DCSF magazine

The article, 'Champions of the world', talks about his 3D mapping project 'Barrow Bridge: Now, Then and the Future' and goes on to explain the aims of the Primary Champions scheme.
