Worldwise Challenge Reports
| Worldwise Challenge 2008 - Malham, North Yorkshire |
The weekend of 18 - 20 April was unseasonably cold, but it didn't stop nine teams of three students thoroughly enjoying the second of two 2008 Worldwise Challenge weekends, held at the Malham Tarn Field Studies Centre in the Yorkshire Dales. All the schools attending had been invited as a reward for engaging with other Worldwise activities: the Local Quiz, the Online Quiz, My Places and Geography Awareness Week. Their challenge for the weekend was to find out 'what makes Malham a special place?'
After getting to know one another on the Friday evening, the teams spent Saturday undertaking a range of fieldwork activities, exploring the area from a geographical perspective. They gathered a variety of evidence for Malham's 'specialness', and on Sunday morning each team gave a creative oral and visual presentation, to a panel of judges including Tony Thomas (Chief Executive of the Field Studies Council), who also presented the awards, and Margaret Roberts (GA Senior Vice President).

The overall winners of the 2008 Malham Worldwise Challenge trophy were the team from King Edward VII School, Sheffield. The award for best team in the field went to QEGS, Wakefield; the award for best presentation went equally to St Mary's College, Hull and Queen Elizabeth School, Kirkby Lonsdale. The standard was extremely high from all schools, and the weekend was agreed by all the students, their teachers, the FSC staff and the GA team of volunteers to be a fun, challenging and truly memorable occasion. This is what some of the teachers had to say about the 2008 Malham Centre Challenge:

| Worldwise Challenge 2008 - Juniper Hall, Surrey |
Over the weekend of 28 - 30 March 2008, nine teams of three students grabbed their opportunity to take part in the first of two Worldwise Challenge weekends being held this year. FSC Juniper Hall Field Centre near Dorking in Surrey was chosen as a new venue to make it easier for teams from in the South of England to take part. All the schools attending had been invited as reward for their prior engagement with other Worldwise activities including the Local Quiz, the Online Quiz, My Places and Geography Awareness Week.

Their challenge for the weekend was to find out 'what makes the area of the North Downs surrounding Juniper Hall special?' and after getting to know one another on the Friday evening they then spent all of Saturday out in the (sometimes rather wet and windy) field undertaking a range of fieldwork activities. The teams were able to gather a range of evidence which they then put to good use on the Sunday morning working within their teams to prepare an oral and visual presentation to a team of judges that included Tony Thomas (Chief Executive of the Field Studies Council) and David Lambert (GA Chief Executive).
