Mexico 2008 - GA International Working Group Study Tour

27 July - 10 August 2008

This year's GA International Working Group Study Tour to Mexico is likely to be popular so book your place soon. The tour will be led by Dr Kevin Cook (St Mary's University College, Strawberry Hill), the author of the successful KS1/2 CD-Rom Tocuaro: A Mexican Village. He has visited Mexico on several occasions and has been the guest of the Horta family in Tocuaro.

The Study Tour will focus on Mexico City and Tocuaro. Participants will experience the contrasts between one of the largest cities in the world and the small village of Tocuaro nestling in the volcanic hills of Michoacan.

The tour will last for approximately two weeks with one week spent in Mexico City and the other in Patzcuaro/Tocuaro, Michoacan.

The programme will include visits to Mexico City's Zocala, the Aztec floating gardens at Xochimilco, the pyramids of Teotihuacan, the archaeological museum and, if possible, local schools. The Patzcuaro focus will include visits to Tocuaro and the Horta family, the volcano Paracutin, the settlements around the shrinking Lake Patzcuaro, and possibly the Monarch butterfly sanctuary.

For KS1/2 teachers the Study Tour will provide a marvellous opportunity to meet the Horta family in their home surroundings. The Mexico City focus will, perhaps, be more appropriate for secondary teachers, although there will certainly be something for everyone. An extension to the Tour to Guatemala will be made at additional cost for those who wish to stay on.

The Mexico part of the tour will cost £1500. The Guatemala extension will cost a further £500.

Whilst this will be primarily a geographical field visit, there will be time to relax and take in the multitude of new experiences in this exciting country.
