Study Tours to China - 2000-02

For over a decade Dr Tony Binns (formerly Chair of the International Committee) has been campaigning for the GA to have a greater role in promoting Study Tours. These pages contain a range of resources provided by members of the International Committee following Study Tours to China in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

We are grateful to Sarah Maude for providing accounts of visits and to Kevin Cook, Joy Barratt and Sarah Maude for photographs used in these pages.

China 2000: the first Tour

Summary 'It was a great trip and one that I shall remember for years.' "The rate of development is so staggering that everyone should see China now!"

Accommodation and food
We stayed in three- star Chinese (or Joint Venture) hotels, which were all quite adequate to very good, with en-suite facilities, etc. They were all well situated near city centres. For me it was a gastronomic tour 'par excellence'. Some members of the group complained that there was too much food, and that we spent too much time eating (Chinese style). Some hotels provided a western breakfast. There were members of the party who, after a week or so, were even glad that China has so many McDonalds! In each place we were given local dishes, and in Sichuan we went to 'hot pot' restaurants where you cook your own.

Cost
The basic cost for the 15 days (and two days travelling) was £1600 plus insurance and visa. This covered everything except pocket money. Those directly involved in geographical education received a subsidy, a small part of the cost, from a Special Fund which does not come from the GA or the Chinese!

Acknowledgements
This Tour was set up at short notice and could not have taken place without the assistance of the Chinese Friendship Association and, in particular, Janice Dickson. Her expert knowledge of China, understanding of Chinese practices and protocol were invaluable. She is a charming and patient travelling companion. We learned from her and she from us, which will help us to make improvements when we put together the next Tour.

We also appreciate the help with various aspects of the preparation and planning of the Tour from various GA officers and headquarters staff.

China 2001: the second Tour

The GA International Committee in association with Ian Dickson Travel (Edinburgh), left on 29 July 2001 for the second in a series of Geographical Study Tours to China. Using a digital camera, the group sent reports and pictures which were published on the website during the Tour which provided an interesting digest of the visit.
