The Yangtse is China's largest river, flowing for more than 6300km and having a catchment area of 1.8 million square kilometres. Its mean annual runoff averages 960 billion cumecs making it the third largest river system in the world.
Between Chongqing and Yichang the river enters a series of spectacular gorges cut into the limestone. As well as showing the entry to one of the gorges, this photo indicates how low the level of the river was in August 2000. It also shows the ‘yellow’ silt laden quality of the river.
