The first 16km and 13 stations of the Shanghai Metro opened in 1995. Today there are two main lines. Line 1 runs north to south for 21km and has 17 stations. Line 2 runs east to west for 16km and currently has 12 stations. The extension west to Hongqiao Airport will open in 2002 and that to Pudong International Airport will be ready in 2005. There are plans to build 11 Metro lines (more than 300km) and 10 light rail lines (120km) in the next 25 years to meet the needs of the 15-20 million people.
In 2000 a single journey of any distance on any one line costs three Yuan (about 25p in 2000). Visit the Shanghai Metro website to view a map and further information.
