Images of China - Safe-keeping

Leaving a bicycle in safe hands

A common practice in most Chinese cities is to cycle to the shops and work. Here a young man, on his way to work, leaves his bicycle with someone who will look after it during the day. She attaches a number to each bicycle for identification and he pays her a few Yuan to keep it safe.

This system works so well that it developed to allow workers to have two bicycles for the journey to work in Shanghai and Beijing. They cycle from home to the Metro where they leave one bicycle. They then take the train to the closest station to their office and pick up their second bicycle, which is waiting for them there. They then cycle to work. They repeat the journey in the evening in reverse. Hundreds of bicycles can be seen outside Metro stations and the system works very well. Perhaps we could adopt it in our cities?
