To suggest simply that China is changing geographically is something of an understatement. Since 1990 almost every aspect of the society has changed dramatically. Even politically aspects of democracy are 'creeping into' the system. It is in the area of economic development that the greatest changes have been witnessed.
Nowhere is this better illustrated than along the banks of the Yangtse or in the new city of Pudong. This photograph shows an all too typical scene at Chongqing on the Yangtse where old and new properties stand side by side. The river will soon flood the old properties and the people are being moved to the new city above the waters.
