Shanghai, with a population of around 15 million, has witnessed enormous expansion since 1980. At its centre lies the People's Square, shown here, with the Shanghai Museum on the left of the picture.
In the background are some of the new financial offices which the urban planners of Shanghai hope will make the city the financial centre of the Pacific Rim. Shanghai has seen the development that has taken place in Hong Kong and Tokyo and is attempting to emulate their successes. Unfortunately construction work has slowed down recently following the financial problems facing the area.
