At 2260km long, the Great Wall is one of the few constructed objects visible from the Moon. It runs generally east to west across China and construction began in the seventh century BC. It stands about 7.5m high and has 12.2m high towers built into it every 180 to 270m. The Wall tapers from a 7.5m thick base to about 4.5m at the top. Its sides are made of earth, brick and stone, while the top is paved with bricks set in lime, forming a roadway for horsemen. The Great Wall was built entirely by hand and took hundreds of years to complete.
Since 1999, US$27.3 billion has been invested in the area. It is linked to the main urban area by a road tunnel and the Metro is due to be extended out to link with the new airport. It is anticipated that Pudong's population will have reached 2 million by 2010.
